Treatment Options for Dark Spots on the Skin

Dark spots can show up on the face for a number of reasons, and they aren’t something you have to live with. If you speak with one of our board-certified dermatologists or skin care experts at Brilliance Dermatology, you will receive several options to diminish the appearance of the dark spots such as bleaching cream, laser destruction, cryosurgery, or Fotofacials (Intense Pulsed Light treatments).

Cryosurgery

With cryosurgery, the dark spots are removed by using a freezing agent like liquid nitrogen. This is sprayed over the dark spots, causing an effect similar to frostbite. After a couple of weeks, the outer skin will peel off leaving new, unblemished skin.

Laser Destruction

With laser destruction, a laser is used to destroy the cells in the skin that produce dark pigment. Unlike chemical peels and dermabrasion, there is decreased risk of postoperative hyperpigmentation. Because the laser targets the dark pigments in the skin, laser destruction is more effective on those with lighter skin.

Fotofacial (IPL)

IPL Fotofacial (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment is often used to improve skin that is damaged due to dark spots, the sun, redness and broken capillaries. Your dermatologist might also recommend bleaching cream to bleach the dark spots out.
