Hair Loss Diagnosis and Treatment in Calabasas

Brilliance Dermatology offers the latest hair loss treatments on the market. Hair loss occurs naturally in both men and women as we age. Our expert dermatologists will work with you to diagnose, prescribe, and manage treatments to keep you looking your best. Although hair loss is normally associated with excessive loss of hair from the scalp, it can also affect other areas of the body.

Men, women, and even children can be affected by hair loss regardless of their age. While some individuals are not bothered by their hair loss, others prefer to seek the help of a professional dermatologist to stop further hair loss and promote the growth of new hair.

Types of Hair Loss

Both men and women can experience gradual thinning of the hair on the top of the scalp as they get older. In men, this type of hair loss is typically characterized by a receding hairline and loss on the crown. In women, the hair loss often results in a broadening of the part on top of the head. This type of hair loss is often caused by heredity. Some individuals develop circular, coin-sized bald spots on their scalp.

The skin of the affected area may also become itchy and tender prior to the hair loss. An extreme emotional or physical shock can cause the hair to loosen suddenly and fall out in clumps when washing or brushing. This typically results in generalized hair loss instead of bald patches. Chemotherapy, radiation, and certain medications can cause full-body hair loss. In most cases, the hair will grow back once the treatment is stopped. Ringworm, a common fungal infection, can cause scaly patches to spread over the scalp and cause patchy hair loss. The affected areas may ooze and become red and swollen.

Other common causes of hair loss include:

  • hormonal changes and imbalances
  • excessive hair pulling
  • autoimmune conditions
  • vitamin, mineral, or electrolyte imbalance
  • scalp infections and skin disorders
  • certain hairstyles
  • medications

The Hair Revival Method

Once our expert dermatologist has diagnosed what type of hair loss you have, the treatment is aimed at minimizing further hair loss and stabilizing your hair. Optimally we will not only stop the loss but also grow back hair that has recently been lost.

Along with possibly running a blood test, and then replacing any deficiency, our team will utilize the latest and best treatment options to optimize your results:

Hair Loss Treatment with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

Platelet Rich Plasma therapy, also known as PRP, offers a new effective treatment to create hair growth in the place of lost or thinning hairs. We are the top dermatology center serving Calabasas and other local communities. With a quick, simple process we can derive a high concentration of biologically nutrient-rich cells and create autologous platelet-rich plasma. Blood is drawn in a manner similar to a basic lab test. The blood is then placed in a centrifuge where it spins at a very rapid rate to separate the platelets from the other components of the blood.

The remaining platelet-rich plasma portion is activated to release at least 8 essential growth factors and signaling proteins. This active component will then be injected into the scalp in a number of precise locations to stabilize loss and promote hair growth. Rejuvenation occurs over the 3-6 months after treatment. Since the Autologous Platelet-Rich Plasma (A-PRP) is processed from the patient’s own blood, there is virtually no risk of allergic reaction or rejection. We are now using a highly concentrated PRP, which is 5x concentrated in platelets where the original PRP was a concentration of 1.2. This is widely considered the most advanced current hair regrowth therapy, and an essential treatment in our Hair Revival Method.

Medications and Topical Treatments

Medications, such as prednisone, can be used to suppress the immune system and prevent hair loss caused by autoimmune diseases. JuveTress Revitalizing Hair Therapy is an over-the-counter topical hair treatment with minimal side effects. Minoxidil is an over-the-counter hair loss treatment approved for both men and women that can slow hair loss and stimulate regrowth.

Finasteride, also known as Propecia, is an oral prescription medication approved to slow the rate of hair loss in men. Spironolactone is a prescription oral diuretic used for hypertension, which is also commonly prescribed by dermatologists for hormonal acne and hair loss in women.

Biotin is a vitamin commonly recommended for patients with hair loss to provide the best environment for hair to survive. All systemic and topical medications have possible risks associated with them.

Laser Helmet

In addition to possible medications, topical treatments, and PRP; we recommend every hair loss patient start using a laser hair therapy helmet 20 minutes per session 2-3 times a week. This has been proven to clinically increase hair growth and is an easy addition to any hair loss program. These are available at Brilliance Dermatology as part of our Hair Revival Method.

Surgery

Surgery can be used to restore hair to bald areas. The procedure involves cutting out skin containing hair from the back and sides of the scalp and grafting them to the bald areas. This is widely considered the last step to treat hair loss and our methods are aimed at preventing or delaying grafting surgery. This surgery can be very painful and costly, but if needed, it can have great results. We do not offer this procedure at Brilliance Dermatology.
