UVB Phototherapy for Psoriasis, Vitiligo, Pruritus and Other Skin Disorders
If you suffer from psoriasis, chronic itching (pruritus), or other skin diseases, a dermatologist can help. The Calabasas Dermatology Center is proud to serve Calabasas and the surrounding area. Our dermatologists have access to a number of therapies to treat skin disorders, including UVB phototherapy.
Phototherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that is highly effective for treating many skin disorders. During phototherapy, ultraviolet light wavelengths are carefully directed at the affected portion of your skin. These wavelengths are absorbed by the skin, reducing the overactive immune response that causes the skin damage associated with these conditions. Phototherapy does not reduce your body's ability to fight infection.
Most people who suffer from psoriasis, vitiligo, chronic itching (pruritus) or eczema, as well as other skin conditions, can benefit from ultraviolet light therapy. Treatments typically take only a few minutes and are performed right in our office. Depending upon the type of skin disorder you have and how severe your symptoms are, you may receive treatments two to three times a week.
Most psoriasis sufferers experience partial to full clearing of their skin using phototherapy, often after as few as 20 treatments. Studies have shown that the majority of patients with chronic itching (pruritus) experience a marked improvement in their symptoms.
Usually, treatments require little to no recovery time. You may experience temporary reddening of the treated area, and some psoriasis patients notice a temporary worsening of their symptoms before improvement occurs. In general, we do not perform this treatment to patients at high risk of skin cancer.
