The UVB Xtract laser is advanced treatment for psoriasis and vitiligo. It can clear the skin to a normal healthy state in record time, with a consistent and predictable outcome. At Brilliance Dermatology, we offer this light therapy treatment, which does not involve exposure to systemic medications and produces consistently excellent results.

What is the Xtrac laser?

The Xtrac laser is a handheld device that concentrates a single band of UVB (Ultraviolet B, part of the light spectrum) on psoriasis lesions or patches of vitiligo depigmentation. The laser focuses a limited bandwidth of UV exposure that penetrates the skin, breaking down the DNA in the T-cells, which are linked to psoriasis plaque and vitiligo. Because it is a limited bandwidth exposure, more energy can be applied for faster, more effective results for than can be achieved with broadband UVB therapy.

Benefits of the Xtrac laser

  • Approved by the FDA for use in psoriasis and vitiligo therapy.
  • Its narrow-band allows faster therapy without damaging the surrounding skin.
  • Xtrac treatments are covered by most health insurance plans.
  • The symptoms often reduce in ten to twelve treatments.
  • Xtrac has none of the side effects of other treatments. Side effects that may occur are often mild and temporary and not metabolic.
  • More skin areas can be treated in one session.
  • Painless, short sessions.
  • Long-lasting results.
  • In most cases, treatment is suitable for children and adults with mild, moderate, or severe cases.
  • Narrow UVB beam makes scalp psoriasis easier to clear – up to 95 percent.
  • Minimizes or completely removes vitiligo depigmented patches and achieves a very positive response rate in most patients.
  • Most importantly, Xtrac laser treatment requires no exposure to systemic meds, which many people want to avoid.

What is vitiligo?

Vitiligo is a skin disease that causes patches of discoloration in the skin pigment. It can occur on any part of the body, and the extent and rate of color loss are unpredictable.

When the cells that produce melanin die or stop functioning, the natural pigmentation in your skin stops being produced in the affected area. The cause of vitiligo is unknown, but researchers point to a disorder where the immune system attacks and destroys the melanocytes in your epidermal layers in your skin. Other causes could be heredity or a triggering event such as exposure to chemicals, stress or even sunburn. This advanced treatment option produces remarkable, long-lasting improvements.

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an inflammatory disease that results in a skin disorder characterized by raised, scaly patches of red skin, most often appearing on the elbows, knees, and scalp or another body area. It may develop at any age, but most frequently appears between the ages of 15 and 35. The condition is diagnosed by a surface examination of the skin by a qualified dermatologist.

How many XTRAC laser treatments will I need?

Because XTRAC is capable of precision, high-intensity output, it is likely the most rapid treatment available. While treatment times will vary depending on the degree of the disease and the amount of area it covers, most therapies require two to three sessions per week for several months. In many cases, symptoms reduce significantly after ten to twelve sessions. Each treatment takes only minutes.

One study found that 72 percent of participating psoriasis patients experienced a minimum of 75 percent skin clearing in an average of six treatments. Half of those patients were 90 percent free of the condition after a maximum of ten sessions. The healthy skin surrounding the psoriasis outbreak was left unaffected.

What is the recovery time?

You may experience some blistering or an effect similar to sunburn, or a mild increase in the skin pigmentation in the treated area. You can finally achieve relief without the need for special creams or medications. Any redness or slight blistering will fade in the days following treatment.

Are there side effects?

A majority of patients experience some redness, but the treatment is painless and well-tolerated, carrying little risk and minimal side effects. Because the Xtract laser operates only in the UVB range, people photosensitive to UVA are not affected. Some patients who are highly sensitive to light will require lower energy treatments, which could extend the course of treatment.
