The Benefits of Micro-needling
Micro-needling, also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT) or percutaneous collagen induction (PCI), is a minimally invasive non-laser procedure used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, minimize scar tissue and stretch marks, eliminate large pores, and even out the skin’s texture.
How is micro-needling done by a certified dermatologist?
A hand-held instrument with delicate needles delivers thousands of little puncture wounds to the top layers of skin, causing the body to create a reaction in which the skin produces collagen and elastin in a natural response to heal itself. As healthy skin replaces damaged cells, your skin becomes healthier and smoother. The cosmetic procedure is safe for all types of skin and can be used on all parts of the body. No heat is involved, and there is little discomfort, although some people feel a sensation of light pinching during the procedure.
Because micro-needling leaves the outer layer of the skin intact, the procedure can be safely repeated and may be suitable for areas of the body where deep chemical peels and laser treatments are not usually done.
How many treatments does it take to enhance my appearance?
It depends on the individual patient. For most people, our dermatologists suggest a series of three sessions every four to six weeks, but some people may need five or six treatments. Approximately 45 to 60 minutes before you come in for each procedure, we will ask you to apply a topical numbing cream prescribed by our office. The actual treatment itself will be done in our facility in Calabasas by a trained professional and usually lasts between 35 and 40 minutes.
What can I expect after each treatment?
Expect your skin to be extremely red after each session. In the following days, the redness will gradually lessen. You may still feel some dryness and tightness and will probably experience some continued redness and slight peeling. Within a week, your skin will heal, and its texture will improve over the coming months as collagen production increases.
